Groundhog Day at Ordway Music Theatre

Why see Groundhog Day?

From The Creative Team Behind Matilda The Musical

Repetition is raised to an art form in Groundhog Day, the feature-film-turned-musical-smash written by musical theater and comedy legend Tim Minchin (whose credits include magical mainstay Matilda) and Danny Rubin, co-writer of the original movie's script. Making its world premiere in London in 2016 and its Broadway bow just a year later, the production drew much critical acclaim for its witty dialogue, laugh-out-loud moments and of course, Minchin's instantly-singable ditties, whip-smart lyrics and soaring melodies.

Stepping out of Bill Murray's considerable shadow, Groundhog Day the musical turns takes the lead role of Murray's Phil and cranks up his cantankerousness to make an all new modern-day scrooge that audiences just can't help but love-to-hate and hate-to-love. The arrogant city-dweller meets his match in Punxsutawney, where magical forces conspire to put him in his place. Part biting small-town satire, part tribute to pastoral wholesomeness, this powerhouse musical ticks all the boxes for a great night out.

What Is Groundhog Day About?

Phil Connors may seem like a charming professional weatherman, but the simple truth is he's a jerk. As soon as he's off camera, his contempt for the world and everyone around him takes over. He's bluntness and rudeness comes to a head when he's forced to head to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover Groundhog Day, a local ceremony centered around the titular rodent that will predict a longer or shorter winter. His producer Rita thinks the festival is good, old-fashioned small town fun but Phil is less than impressed. His curmudgenly ways catch up to him however, when he discovers he's stuck in a time loop and has to live the same day over, and over, and over, and over, and over again.
