Minnesota Opera: Carmen

Minnesota Opera: Carmen at Ordway Music Theatre

Why see Minnesota Opera: Carmen?

Opera's Most Scorching Tale

Bizet's timeless, sultry masterpiece, comes to the Ordway Center in what will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of St Paul's classical season. With a libretto by Henry Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy, Carmen first premiered in Paris in 1875, and has come to be regarded as one of the artform's greatest achievements. Minnesota's Music Director Michael Christie conducts, while the role of Carmen will be played by Nora Sourouzian and Victoria Vargas on alternate nights.

Set in the blaze of the Spanish heat in 19th Century Seville, Carmen is the provocative Gyspy woman, whose short temper brings her to the attention of the kind and charismatic Don Jose, who falls head over heels in love with her. An intense tale of love found and ruthlessly taken, Carmen is one of Opera's most intense and passionate pieces.
